Objectives

The goal of this course to stimulate a first reflection on macroeconomic methods and phenomena. It presents an overview of basic facts and issues with which modern economies are confronted. It thus provides an outline of topics which will be investigated further in more advanced courses.

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of main economic facts and issues;
  • use simple models to understand and analyze the most common macroeconomic phenomena and policies;
  • assess the scope and the limitations of the models used.

  • Measuring and interpreting major macroeconomic variables
  • Economic growth: an introduction
  • The Solow growth model
  • The goods markets
  • The financial markets
  • The IS-LM model
  • The labor market
  • The Phillips curve
  • The IS-LM-PC model
  • Open macroeconomics: goods and capital flows in an open economy
  • The goods market in an open economy
  • The Mundell-Fleming model
