Objectives

The objective of this course is twofold. First, it extends the first-semester macroeconomics course to the open economy. Second, it deals with selected topics in international macroeconomics.

Contents

The focus is on theoretical analysis, but empirical evidence and policy issues are also discussed. The first part of the course deals with real models. It starts with the standard intertemporal approach to the current account and extends it in various directions to examine issues like global imbalances, international risk sharing, real exchange rate determinants, credit market imperfections, and sovereign debt. The second part of the course covers monetary models, with a focus on the nominal exchange rate and on balance-of-payments crises.
