Objectifs

The objective of this course is twofold. First, it extends the first-semester macroeconomics course to the open economy. Second, it deals with selected topics in international macroeconomics.

Contenus

The focus is on theoretical analysis, but empirical evidence and policy issues are also discussed. The first part of the course deals with real models. It starts with the standard intertemporal approach to the current account and extends it in various directions to examine issues like global imbalances, international risk sharing, real exchange rate determinants, credit market imperfections, and sovereign debt. The second part of the course covers monetary models, with a focus on the nominal exchange rate.

Evaluation:

There will be a class presentation, a midterm exam, and a final exam. The exams are written, closed-book, 2-hour exams. The midterm counts 40% if the grade is better than the final exam. The final exam counts 40%, or 80% if the final grade is better than the midterm grade.
