The Corona crisis has strong effects on the economy, and affected employment and firm surival dramatically. The objective of this class is to look into key economic approaches to studying labor markets with a focus on policy issues. In this class, you will build important knowledge of how the labor market, the largest market in any economy, works. You will also learn to apply your new skills to a specific policy, e.g. unemployment benefits, minimum wage, short-time work etc. Those policies have been very useful and at times greatly expanded during the Corona crisis. You will learn how to discuss their rationale and whether they stand at the optimal level or not.

The class is dvided in two parts.

Part I: Learning about the labor market, firms, job search, equilibrium unemployment, insurance policies, and transfer policies.

Part II: Applying your insights to a specific type of policy, and elaborating a policy assessment.

We will build our knowledge mainly using the textbook "Labor Economics", by Stéphane Carcillo, Pierre Cahuc, and André Zylberberg, MIT Press, Second Edition. All three have extensive experience in advising the French government in labor market issues.
