This course provides an introduction to distributed ledger technology, blockchains and cryptocurrencies. It focuses on the applications of these technologies in finance and banking.


The course covers the basics of cryptography and its applications to cryptocurrencies; historical examples to centralized cryptocurrencies; foundations of modern decentralized cryptocurrencies; mechanics of Bitcoin platform including storage, mining, wallets, etc.; alternative platforms, including Ethereum; smart contracts; potential applications of decentralized ledgers in finance and their pros and cons. The course focuses on blockchain programming, with several projects relying on Bitcoin and Ethereum platforms and a group project whose topic to be chosen by the student.

Final grade is the weighted average of the grades obtained for, respectively, the homeworks, the group project and the final exam. The following rule is applied:

final grade = 0.3 x homeworks + 0.4 x group project + 0.3 x final exam.

The homeworks grade is an aggregate grade based on the multiple practical exercises distributed during the semester. The group project grade depends on the quality of the report and oral presentation. Final exam is written and does not allow documentation.

The student has the option to retake the final exam, and to submit a second version of his group project and defend it. The evaluation criterions are otherwise similar.
