Objectifs

The objective of this course is to equip participants with analytical tools to support decision making in managing operations and supply chains. We begin by reviewing concepts taught in the bachelor course Gestion des opérations, and develop the ability to use these concepts in an industrial setting. Participants are encouraged to think both about how to design and operate supply chains effectively, and about the broader operations strategy and how the supply chain can be leveraged as a source of competitive advantage.

Course organization

The course will meet weekly on Wednesday mornings. Simulation games and cases are used to give participants experience in applying analytical tools in situations that resemble what they will face professionally.

Course material is evenly divided between mastery of technical material and its application in practice. Mastery of technical material will be assessed using regular quizzes that will take place in class.

  • Case studies available on the Harvard University website.
  • Other course materials will be distributed via Moodle.

Participants are required to acquire course materials from the Harvard Business School Press. The expected cost will be around CHF 50.

Software

  • MS Excel
  • Mobius and ForClass web-based software will be used during the course. Details will be available on Moodle.
  • Games and simulations.

Pré-requis

  • Participants are expected to be familiar with the basics of statistics and MS Excel.

Grading is composed of three parts:

  1. A Technical grade based on Mobius exams taking place throughout the semester (60%) and a final Mobius exam (40%).
  2. A ForClass grade based on weekly assignments participation.
  3. A Workshop grade based on attendance and active participation (oral interventions) in workshop sessions (case studies, simulations).

  • To get a grade of 4.0, participants must obtain a total of over 70/100 points for the Technical grade.
  • To get a grade of 4.5, participants must obtain a total of over 80/100 points for the Technical grade, submit at least 5/11 satisfactory ForClass assignments, and get at least 5/33 points for the Workshop grade.
  • To get a grade of 5.0, participants must obtain a total of over 80/100 points for the Technical grade, submit at least 5/11 satisfactory ForClass assignments, and get at least 10/33 points for the Workshop grade.
  • To get a grade of 5.5, participants must obtain a total of over 80/100 points for the Technical grade, submit at least 10/11 satisfactory Forclass assignments, and get at least 20/33 points for the Workshop grade.
  • To get a grade of 6.0, participants must obtain a total of over 80/100 points for the Technical grade, submit at least 10/11 satisfactory Forclass assignments, and get at least 25/33 points for the Workshop grade.

Evaluation:

For participants who have not reached the required 70% of Mobius points required to receive a grade of 4, a 2-hour computer-based online assessment will be conducted in the CEI during the exam session. During that assessment, all documentation is permitted, and any calculator generally accepted for exams at HEC. The computer screen must remain on the quiz and in fullscreen mode during the entire session.
