The objective of this course is to present and gain experience with conceptual models that facilitate transforming operations management into competitive advantage. Building on the quantitative-finance tools learned in Supply-Chain Analytics (taught concurrently), we will analyze the operations and supply chains of case companies to see where competitive advantage lies.

The course is case based. Cases have been chosen that replicate the decisions that companies are facing with respect to how to organize and develop their operations and supply chains.

It's About Time, Suri, Rajan.

Students must be taking (or have taken) the course Supply-Chain Analytics. There are no exceptions.

Technical knowledge required:

  • Ability to transform a service level into a fill rate for lognormal demand
  • Ability to estimate the change in volatility exposure from a change in lead time
  • Ability to transform an order quantity into multiplicative standard deviations
  • Ability to incorporate a second-order possibility into calculations using option-based costing
  • Familiarity with process analysis
  • Ability to use basic queuing-theory concepts
