Objectives

The objectives of this course are (1) to provide you with theoretical knowledge based on scientific evidence stemming from the domains of communication and leadership and (2) to enable you to develop your own communication and leadership skills.

Equipped with theoretical and empirical knowledge, you will be able to analyze the communication of leaders and to differentiate between more or less efficient leadership styles. You will know how to illustrate the effects of power on verbal and nonverbal communication and you will know the factors that cause misunderstandings in communication as well as the factors that will render communication more efficient especially in a hierarchical environment.

Through personal development, you will learn how to communicate more persuasively and you will gain a better understanding of the perceptions others have of your communication and leadership style. You will improve your self-presentation skills.

Contents

The course is concerned with how leaders use communication and how communication is important for leaders. In terms of leadership, we will cover topics such as different leadership styles and their effectiveness, the dark side of leadership, emergent leadership, and the situation of women in leadership positions. With respect to communication, we will study the actions and situations in which leaders use communication and the means by which they communicate to reach their goals (e.g., persuasion, nonverbal behavior). This course is accompanied by validations that enable students to deepen and practice their acquired knowledge in order to foster personal development in the domains of leadership and communication.
