To demonstrate how to apply operations management principles to supply chain management in different business contexts.

To explain the strategic importance of logistics to overall business success and how performance is measured in supply chain management.

To provide students with hands on information through case studies fostered with several guest lectures given by industrial supply chain managers and experts.

To assess the creation of value for different players in the supply chain to better serve the customers, society, and environment.

To give students hands on experience on global operations and supply chain management in real industrial context.


The course consists of two main blocks. First one concerns general introductory lectures and cases on the key concepts, principles, and laws related to operations and supply chain management. The second part is related a real industry case at Medtronic corporation and how they handle global operations and supply chain management for their various medical devices.

The first block (8 sessions) will discuss operational speed and productivity and their relationship, supply chains and their dynamics, purchasing and sourcing. Some simple exercises will be made to foster the understanding of the key concepts. These exercises cover basic supply chain management issues through simple calculations on pipeline inventories and related costs, and how they change when the supply chain structure is altered. Issues related to latest trends in supply chain management several case studies will be used concerning supply chain audit, quality management, channel management and change management in supply chain context.

The second block is based on 4 intensive sessions, including a site visit at Medtronic corporation (Tolochenaz, next to Morges):

- Session 1: Introduction to Healthcare and MedTech industry. What is the general structure of the supply chain in these businesses and what is special in the supply chain for medical devices? Medtronic company is presented, and their Global Operations & Global Supply Chain operations are discussed in detail and what are the challenges they are facing. The industry is highly regulated with most stringent quality standards. Session will end with the introducing of the Medtronic group assignment on which the whole grading of the course is based.

- Session 2: This session takes place at the Medtronic EMEA Head Quarter in Tolochenaz (about 15 mins by car from the University, next to Morges). The visit will include an overall factory tour along with a view to the clean room manufacturing area. Students will see the end-to-end product flow as well as the manufacturing/assembly process to produce a medical device implantable into the human body. The aim is to analyse the process, interview Medtronic Operations & Supply Chain Leaders, and apply the key learnings of the course to solve real life challenges of this company.

- Session 3: The aim is to cover essentials on how to design Global Supply Chain Networks. We will review the product flow from suppliers, to factories, to distribution centres right to the final customers. We will also analyse how the COVID pandemic modified the Operations & Supply Chain management forever, reflecting the new obstacles and how to mitigate them. Finally, we will close the session by discussing about the future of supply chain management through trendy topics such as: drone deliveries, digitalization, virtual & augmented reality, sustainability & environmental impact, etc.

- Session 4: This session is dedicated to another real-life business case from Medtronic. It concerns planning & matching supply with demand. First, key concepts are introduced on how a company sets up its planning organization before reflecting in groups on multiple challenges related to Integrated Business Planning. Students are introduced to a case, before presenting solutions in groups and debating with the class (not a graded assignment). The session is closed by sharing experiences & advises on how to start career in Operations & supply chain management (internships, job interviews, starting in a multinational company, etc.).

Individual assignment: Pick 2 academic peer-reviewed articles related to operations and supply chain management (O&SCM). Study the articles by their content, research problem, method, data, and results achieved. The articles may concern same subject or totally different subjects, as long as they are related to O&SCM. Once the articles are explained, apply the result or results to a real-world case in your own words to prove that the results are applicable and meaningful. Report all this in less than 10 pages.


Course material (slides and cases) will be distributed via course www-site, yet there are numerous textbooks on the topic. Some of them combine numerous topics related to operations and supply chain management in general. Here are some and most of them can be found at the university library:

Operations management courses are of benefit, yet not obligatory.


1ère tentative

Sans examen (cf. modalités)  

Evaluation is based 70% on group assignment and 30% on individual assignment. Students will analyse the Medtronic case in groups, and they should provide the company representatives with their recommendations in a consulting report format. Deadline: Upload your group assignment on the course Moodle before by Sunday 15th of January 2023. For the individual assignment the deadline is the last session of the course before Christmas.


Sans examen (cf. modalités)  

100% based on a new assignment to be done individually, deadline 30th of August 2023.
