Objectifs

This course provides an introduction to microeconomics, game theory, and industrial organization. Economics is a social science, offering a coherent theory with the aim to explain human behavior. Students learn to `think formally like an economist' and to apply the theory to real world problems. The course contains both an intuitive approach and basic analytical tools necessary to understandand microeconomic models and to solve microeconomics problems.

The course will cover the following topics

• Microeconomics

– Consumer behavior
– Firm behavior
– Supply and demand in competitive markets
– Welfare theorems
– Externalities

• Game theory

– Strategic interaction
– Static games of complete information
– Dynamic games of complete information
– Repeated games

– A glance into games of incomplete information

• Industrial organization

– Imperfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly
– Price discrimination
– Cartel formation

– Advertising and other topics

Students are required to present problem sets in class. Grading depends on the final exam, 2h, closed book. [ 4 function calculator according to HEC directive]

90% of the grade is the final closed-book written exam

10% of the grade is active participation during the course (presentation of the solutions and answering questions)
