This course provides basic knowledge about empirical work for law students. Participants learn to analyze data and interpret empirical results reported in scientific publications. The course discusses a selection of empirical papers in Law & Economics in detail. The course emphasizes the applied side of empirical work. Students learn to work with data and present descriptive and inferential statistics.


The course consists of lectures and exercises.

The lectures provide the methodological basis. Topics are:
- How to gather data: survey, archival, experimental
- How to describe data: descriptive statistics, means, moments, distributions
- How to draw inference: hypotheses testing, causality
- How to present empirical work: interpretation of regression output

The practical part will cover
- Data analysis with Stata
- Present empirical work

The final grade is a weighted average of the following grades:

  • 30% group project (presentation in class and short paper),
  • 10% for a graded problem set,
  • 60% written exam.

Note that exam conditions might change due to the COVID-19 situation.
