The purpose of this interdisciplinary course is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the need for, and impact of, social and sustainable innovation while supporting an organization in developing potential solutions to address a real-world societal problem. This experiential learning course, which combines classroom learning with hands-on learning, is an opportunity for students to develop creativity, project management, and analytical skills.


The course will include academic and practitioner articles and other sources related to social innovation and the core topics. The course lectures, class discussions, and all graded work will be based upon the assigned articles, readings, podcasts, websites, and real-world examples.

Some of the core topics that will be covered are: innovation and productive entrepreneurship, social enterprise, the role of ecosystems, understanding stakeholder groups, funding social ventures, and impact masurement.

Students will work in small interdisciplinary groups to analyse specific challenges faced by a social venture that is trying to implement solutions that address key societal issues. Working in teams of 5-6, students will conduct research, data analysis, and strategic planning in order to develop potential solutions that will help the organization to achieve the strategic objectives of the social impact project. Everyone is also required to contribute to the course discussions and online forum.


A collection of articles from academic and practitioner journals related to the central topics will be used. Additional readings from the popular press (newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc.), podcasts, and videos will be assigned throughout the semester.


None - MSc students from all UNIL faculties are welcome.
