Objectifs

Objectives

The goal of this course is to foster students’ understanding of power and leadership, two concepts that dominate hierarchical relationship in the workplace. This course intends to provide students with strong theoretical knowledge and to give them opportunities to train key leadership skills.

Because the course requires an active participation and the creation of groups from the 2nd week onwards, you are required to confirm your participation in the class as soon as possible.

Contenus

The course focuses on how people behave in hierarchical relationships. We will discuss how a person obtains power in a group and how a person who has power interacts with others. The course consists of knowledge transmission of empirical and theoretical work on power and leadership and of leadership skills development. Active participation of students in class is mandatory and by participating in this course, students agree on performing in front of the class, being videotaped, and receiving individualized feedback from the group.

Knowledge transmission will focus on questions such as how hierarchies are created, how leaders emerge, or what are the effects of power. In addition, we will cover practical leadership questions such as how to manage conflicts within a team, how to be persuasive or how to lead in a digital world. Knowledge transmission will be achieved by 3 means: (1) weekly readings and discussions led by students and moderated by the instructor, (2) presentations of empirical evidence and case studies by the instructor and (3) a group project on a theme related to leadership and power.

Personal development will focus on training key leadership skills such as persuasion and public speaking, managing conflicts, time and resource management, and avoiding biases. Leadership skills development will be achieved via: (1) role-plays, (2) pitch training, and (3) feedback and self-reflection on you own leadership skills and development.

In accordance to the faculty guidelines, in case of a fail, students will be given the opportunity to do a second attempt at activities that they would have failed. The same rules and grading criteria apply to first and second attemps.

If the first attempt was a group work, the second attempt should be a group work. In that specific example, if only one student fails the course, an individual work that respect the same rules and grading criteria as the first attempt will be offered since it is not possible to constitute a group.
