This course continues the development of the microeconomic theory of behavior. It will develop the necessary theoretical tools to understand the behavior of consumers and organisations in many different environments. The course will introduce the more advanced concepts in microeconomic theory, but also point out their limitations in explaining behavior. At a methodological level, this course will use experiments throughout the semester to show how they can be used to estimate preference parameters and test theories.

The first few weeks we will introduce the mathematical theory of consumer behavior. This model will enable us to derive market demand, and characterize the efficiency properties of the equilibrium of a competitive market. We will also extend the model to new domains: How do individuals make choices under uncertainty? How do individuals choose consumption over time? What are the empirical problems of these theories of behavior?

The second part of the course will focus on the analysis of strategic decisions, that is, situations in which an individual to decide on the best course of action, knowing that others will do so as well, and that their actions will affect his payoff. We will develop the necessary theoretical framework to analyze such situations and to make predictions. We will apply the concepts for example to analyze imperfect competition between firms and conflict situations.
