Call for paper for the mini-track “Developing Visual Collaborative Tools” at HICSS’2020

Visual collaborative tools have recently emerged and gained popularity to innovate and/or address problems collaboratively within teams. By providing a shared language and/or a shared visualization, they support several challenges of collaboration related to sense-making and sense-giving and action planning in multior transfunctional teams. One of the goals of these tools is to assist teams to explore and/or brainstorm on a given problem. This is especially useful in processes which need to generate new options and alternatives through design. These tools allow for better structuring and bounding of a problem and facilitate solution searches in innovative ways during collaboration. This minitrack focuses on the design and development challenges, related theoretical explanations and justifications, and empirical evidence of using such tools. We also invite works that develop evaluation frameworks, or conduct empirical assessments of the effects of using these tools. We also encourage submissions that report the design processes of such tools and/or their conceptual modeling, as well as, their ontological and/or cognitive foundations. This minitrack invites submissions on, but are not limited to, the following topics:

Design / Development process of visual tools
Design principles of this/these tool/s
Conceptual modeling
Modeling methods, ontological modeling of methods that underlie the tools
Conceptual foundations of visual cognition and related sense making
How to design such tool(s) for shared visualization
Explanations how visual tool/s can support innovation in teams
In what way/s these artifacts can facilitate cross-boundary collaboration
The role of visual tool/s in promoting the use of design thinking (and vice versa)
The role of IS research and design theories in designing such tool/s for managerial/strategic purposes and practice in general
How the models of these tools can be transformed into computer-aided design options downstream
Implications of such tools for design practice and theory

Interacting with information technology (IT) has become a pervasive element in private and business life. In a sharing society with the advanced development of IT, humans need to constantly adjust to the latest technological circumstances and adapt their routines and habits accordingly. Similarly, system designers need to build on a profound theoretical and methodological knowledge base for the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel artefacts in a highly competitive and dynamic market environment. The interdisciplinary area of design research in Information Systems is concerned with informing the design of IT artefacts by establishing and applying comprehensive (design) theories, exploring and testing models with rigorous research, providing validated evaluation methods and design guidelines, as well as designing and evaluating IT artefacts.

In information systems, scholars can follow different approaches when engaging in design-oriented research. Firstly, researchers can engage in artefact creation following design science research (DSR). Here, the focus is to identify and understand an important real-world problem and provide a solution for it by building and evaluating artefacts. Researchers thereby can contribute with theory-grounded and artefact-centric design knowledge to the scientific knowledge base. Secondly, researchers can engage in understanding and investigating specific design elements of an information system by conducting empirical research, both qualitatively and quantitatively (e.g., interviews, laboratory experiments, surveys). By doing so, researchers can also contribute valuable design knowledge.

The aim of this track is to stimulate research that extends the scientific knowledge base for design research in information systems in general and for the sharing society in particular. We thereby seek research that produces novel design knowledge about IT artefacts for addressing real-world problems (e.g., data-driven design, digital assistants, socially influencing systems), methodological contributions for the design of such systems (e.g., cross-disciplinary research, participatory-design, user experience engineering), as well as research addressing the implications of specific design elements of information systems (e.g. flow, privacy). We welcome a diversity of submissions focusing on designing, developing, and evaluating IT artefacts, adding to the theoretical and methodological knowledge base about design research in information systems and the role of design research in problem domains (Rai, 2017), and exploring tool support for design science research (Morana et al., forthcoming).

By providing a shared language and/or a shared visualization (Bresciani and Eppler, 2009; Comi and Bresciani, 2017), they support several challenges of collaboration related to sense-making and sense-giving and action planning in multi-or transfunctional teams. One of the goals of these tools is to assist teams to explore and/or brainstorm on a given problem. This is especially useful in processes which need to generate new options and alternatives through design. These tools allow for better structuring and bounding of a problem and facilitate solution searches in innovative ways during collaboration (Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2010; Van der Pijl et al., 2016).

Specifically, this minitrack invites submissions on the following topics (but is not limited to them):
