talk and discussion at NUS Enterprise Center

talk on business model design to the coaches and entrepreneurs of the NUS Enterprise Center (NEC), headed by Prof. Wong Poh-Kam, followed by a long fruitful discussion on value proposition design, product features definition and business model evolution, illustrated with a local start-up (transparent braces for orthodontists).

The visual Business Model Canvas (BMGEN) helps entrepreneurs to design, challenge and evaluate their business models. The concepts are illustrated by examples of business model innovation, such as Apple iPod, Nespresso and SunEdison in the solar industry. Design thinking attitude and techniques are emphasized for exploring, prototyping and testing business models.

The Value Proposition Designer is like a plug-in tool to the Business Model Canvas. It helps you design, test, and build your company’s Value Proposition to Customers in a more structured and thoughtful way, just like the Canvas assists you in the business model design process ’ (see previous post).

Inspiring by “Crossing the Chasm” by Geoffrey Moore (web) that focuses on the specifics of marketing high-tech products during the beginning of the start-up, Wong Poh-Kam uses a circle-shaped product map for defining the features and the product evolution of the start/up.
