BMGEN workshop at Tokyo

“Business Model Workshop for the innovators, movers & shakers” in Tokyo, with ’?’?’?’? Takashi Tsutsumi, the translator of Steve Blank’s books in Japanese. The workshop was organized by ’?’? ’? Shin Yamamoto, ’?’?’?’? Tobby Munenori Tobisawa, and their colleagues; I met them in my previous visit (see previous post). The event was supported by CoachingBank (web) and the translation done by ’?’?’?’? Shinobu Sheena Urita (spirit195).

Shin Yamamoto and Yasuhiro Watanabe have launched a dynamic BMGEN community (web) in Japan. They give workshops on business models on a regular basis in Japan (web). Yasuhiro is also the founder of the Word Alliance Reading Magazines (WARM).

The workshop aims at presenting the Business Model Canvas for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Business model innovation will be illustrated with examples. In a second part, design thinking attitude will also be emphasized for exploring and prototyping business models. The new Value Proposition Canvas will be illustrated. In the third part, the synergy between the business model canvas, Eric Ries’s lean startup and Steve Blank’s customer development will be proposed for testing value propositions and business models.

Grand Master Class at Seoul

a keynote for MICimpact (web) at M square, for (more than 200) entrepreneurs, consultants, students and BMGEN fans. Fantastic evening with Mike Han (the founder of MICimpact) and his team Mi Young Hong, Alex, Soowan, John (the translator) and many others.

Mike and his team decided to organise this Grand Master Class 5 days before my visit in Seoul, and ’ more than 200 persons showed up, full of fans and enthusiasts of BMGEN. The talk presented the Business Model Canvas. Business model innovation has been illustrated with examples. Design thinking attitude was also be emphasized for exploring and prototyping business models. Finally, the synergy between the business model canvas, lean startup and customer development will has been briefly emphasised for testing business models.

The article presents the lecture. In addition to a short presentation of the BMGEN canvas and the Nespresso case study by the participants, the talk also proposed a couple of suggestions for entrepreneurs: using design thinking techniques, as architects, for prototyping theirs business models and testing their business models “out of the building”.

seminar at Yonsei Business School, invited by Prof. Kil-Soo Suh (web) and Jai-Yeol Son (colleagues of mine when I was visiting prof. at UBC, Vancouver in 2004). The Yonsei MIS department (ISatYonsei) is ranked # 1 in Korea, # 44 worlwide in UTD ranking.

The talk will present a visual language for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Business model innovation and industry changes will be illustrated with examples. Design thinking attitude and customer centricity will also be emphasized for exploring, prototyping and testing business models. Three research areas and artifacts have been explored. The first one concerns the formalization and visualization of the core constructs related to business models. The second area corresponds to the exploration of how design techniques might contribute to improving the generation and evaluation of multiple business models. The third one is the research of computer-aided design assisting in the process of designing strategic objects such as business models.

workshop on “Business Model and Service Innovation” for ESSEC Asia (web) in its “Executive Workshop series”, with Xavier Pavie, invited by Prof. Hervé Mathe, head of ESSEC Asia.

This interactive workshop aims to provide participants with knowledge of innovative business models. The program will explain how to apply design thinking and explore innovative business models through concept discussions and in-depth analysis (more).

The first day, by Xavier, will present (a) the notions of ’Service’ and ’Innovation’, (b) service innovation as a means of breaking through and reinventing Business Models, (c) repositioning a brand through innovation strategy in a service firm and innovation as a way to disrupt conventional Systems, and (d) responsible Innovation as a key challenge for the company.

The second day aims at presenting the Business Model Canvas for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Business model innovation will be illustrated with examples. mini-workshop for NUS EMBA students, invited by Prof. Neo Kok Beng in his course “Technology Transfer and Commercialisation”. Kok Beng is also in charge of the course “Design Thinking & Business Innovations” (1st semester).

BMGEN workshop at Start-up Design Week

1-day workshop on business model design for the start-up design week (web), invited by Khairu Rejal, program leader. Together with Khairu, Teddy Zmrhal from IDEO SIngapore will introduce the design thinking techniques and other deep dive tools.

The venue is the *SCAPE building at Orchad Link. *SCAPE is a non-profit organisation with its mission and vision rooted in support of youth, talent and leadership development. The organisation aims to facilitate youth-oriented programmes and support within various communities of youth interest. (more)

The Monday session aims at providing (very) young entrepreneurs with the Business Model Canvas for designing, prototyping and testing business models. Business model innovation and industry changes will be illustrated with examples such as Nespresso, Circus of the Sun, Apple, Amazon, Nintendo, SunEdisson, Eight19, and AirBnB. Design thinking attitude and customer centricity will also be emphasised with practical exercises. The new Value Proposition Designer will be illustrated and practiced.

Cross-border innovation & entrepreneurship

Keynote at the “Cross-Border Innovation and Entrepreneurship Symposium”, organised by the SMU Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE) and ESSEC business school, Singapore, 4th December 2012.

Nice talks by Robin Speculand and Xavier Pavie.

Robin is the author of the book “Bricks to Bridges” (web) and the CEO of Bridges Business in SIngapore (video). He presented his interesting “implementation compass”, a 8-point framework to guide organisations in implementation.

Xavier, director of ISIS (web) at ESSEC, presented a nice talk on “Responsible innovation”, based on his works and large experience in this area (video). He authored the book “Innovation-responsable : Stratégie et levier de croissance pour les organisations” (web).

My talk presented the Business Model Canvas for designing, prototyping and testing business models. The concepts has been illustrated by examples of business model innovation, some of them with a positive environmental impact (SunEdison)
