DESIGN SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT OBJECTS: A RESEARCH AGENDA
Alexander Osterwalder & Yves Pigneur

HEC Montréal building

Information Systems research has substantially contributed to improving decision-making and its support in organizations. We argue that IS research can make similar contributions in the field of designing organizational strategies by investigating the use of Design Support Systems for Strategic Management Objects. We propose three research areas that build on each other: Firstly, the formalization and visualization of the core constructs and models of interest related to the design and analysis of strategic business issues. Secondly, the exploration of how design techniques and tools might contribute to improving the design of answers and alternatives to strategic business questions. Thirdly, the research of ’Design’ Support Systems assisting in the process of designing Strategic Management Objects. The talk will illustrate theses ideas with a practical visual language to describe, challenge, and design business models, typical strategic management objects. Attendance should also appreciate powerful examples of business model innovation, such as Nespresso, SunEdisson and Peepoople.
