BMGEN for social entrepreneurs

mini-workshop on business models and social entrepreneurship at NUS Enterprise Center will be scheduled, with Prof. Wong Poh Kam.

During this session, the Business Model Canvas will be presented and used for designing, prototyping and testing business models. Business model innovation in social entrepreneurship will be illustrated with examples such as Grameen Phone (web), Peepoople (web), Eight19 (web) Azuri (web) and A-Changin (web). Design thinking attitude and customer centricity will also be emphasised with practical exercises.

Edmund Phelps, the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics, is the Dean of New Huadu Business School since April 2010.

The talk aims at learning about and applying the Business Model Canvas, a practical visual language, to describe, challenge, and design business models. The concepts will be illustrated by examples of business model innovation. Design thinking attitude is also emphasized for exploring, prototyping and testing business models. The links with other strategic management objects (value chain, SWOT analysis, 5 forces, jobs-to-be-done, Blue Ocean Strategy, ’) will be discussed.

The seminar will present a visual language for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Business model innovation and industry changes will be illustrated with examples such as Nespresso, Circus of the Sun, and SunEdisson. Design thinking attitude and customer centricity will also be emphasized for exploring, prototyping and testing business models.

Three research areas and artifacts have been explored. The first one concerns the formalization and visualization of the core constructs related to business models. The second area corresponds to the exploration of how design techniques might contribute to improving the generation and evaluation of multiple business models. The third one is the research of computer-aided design assisting in the process of designing strategic objects such as business models.

talk on business model design to the coaches and entrepreneurs of the NUS Enterprise Center (NEC), headed by Prof. Wong Poh-Kam, followed by a long fruitful discussion on value proposition design, product features definition and business model evolution, illustrated with a local start-up (transparent braces for orthodontists).

The visual Business Model Canvas (BMGEN) helps entrepreneurs to design, challenge and evaluate their business models. The concepts are illustrated by examples of business model innovation, such as Apple iPod, Nespresso and SunEdison in the solar industry. Design thinking attitude and techniques are emphasized for exploring, prototyping and testing business models.

The Value Proposition Designer is like a plug-in tool to the Business Model Canvas. It helps you design, test, and build your company’s Value Proposition to Customers in a more structured and thoughtful way, just like the Canvas assists you in the business model design process ’ (see previous post).

Inspiring by “Crossing the Chasm” by Geoffrey Moore (web) that focuses on the specifics of marketing high-tech products during the beginning of the start-up, Wong Poh-Kam uses a circle-shaped product map for defining the features and the product evolution of the start/up.
