workshop on business models at TU Vienna, invited by Prof. Hannes Werthner, Director Vienna PhD School of Informatics, and Birgit Hofreiter, head of the Informatics Innovation Center (i²c)

The workshop aims at (a) learning about and applying a practical visual language to describe, challenge, and design business models, (b) appreciating powerful examples of business model innovation, ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies and social entrepreneurship ventures, and (c) exploring and prototyping business models using design thinking and customer development to boost future growth. The day will be a mix between presentation, q&a, buzz groups, and hands on practice.

talk “Designing, prototyping and testing business models” (web) at TU Vienna, invited by Prof. Hannes Werthner and supported by the Austrian national newspaper ’Der Standard’.

This hands-on and interactive talk aims at presenting the Business Model Canvas for designing, assessing and challenging business models. Design thinking attitude will also be emphasized for exploring and prototyping business models. Finally, the synergy between the business model canvas, lean startup and customer development will be briefly presented for testing value propositions and business models. The tools and methods are based on the book “Business Model Generation” Yves and Alex co-authored, which sold over 600,000 copies around the world and has been translated into over 27 languages.

A workshop on Design, Business Model and Innovation for more than 100 entrepreneurs at Kuala Lumpur, with Teddy Zmrhal (web), IDEO Singapore, invited by Andrew Tan and CRADLE (web).

What are human-centered design and design thinking? And how can they be used to influence and develop new products and services? And how can a people-centered strategy for change transform private and public sector organizations? The first part of the workshop, by Teddy, will give attendees the opportunity to learn about IDEO’s own culture of innovation and how it has brought to life some of the firm’s most notable work. Case studies will bring to life how the methods and tools of design can help organizations tackle their hairiest challenges. Finally, the group will look at how the business model canvas can be integrated into the design process.

Teams presented highly interesting and promising projects: (a) ThatApp is a means of education for teens on sex health, it uses gamification as an aspect to penetrate knowledge into the minds of teens via mobile devices, (b) Rare Genomics Asia empowers patient communities to accelerate research by helping fund and create personalized research projects for individuals with rare diseases, (c) The Blood Donors Network is a web and geo-targeted mobile app that its primary purpose is to have immediate access to database of people who are regular blood donors in case that somebody asks for blood, and (d) Find Art is a mobile app that helps you find, keep and share art. Find Art engages the local art ecosystem (artists, art lovers, students, curators, schools, galleries, museums, festivals, events) in the real world.

The teams used the Business Model Canvas. With BMGEN and related design thinking techniques, we offer social entrepreneurs a guide to designing, prototyping and testing innovative business models that can help them profitably improve the firm’s social and environmental footprint. We illustrate this process through the examples of Grameen Phone, Eight19 and Peepoople.
