“Given present trends in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, finding solutions to stabilize or even decrease the atmospheric concentration of this greenhouse gas becomes urgent matter. One option, «carbon capture and valorization» (CCV) emerged recently. According to the perspective of industrial ecology, CCV considers carbon dioxide as a resource instead of a waste. (more)

All year long, special conferences, debates and publications will showcase the teaching, research and knowledge production which takes place at the Faculty.

This project (Pervacy) will address the challenges posed by the advent of mobile pervasive services in terms of privacy. In particular, special attention will be given to challenges related location-based information manipulated by such services. From a conceptual perspective, the project will consider issues along three complementary angles, namely a distributed systems angle, a software engineering angle and a mobile business angle. From a practical perspective, the project will aim at producing a software platform that will allow end-users to control the privacy of their personal information themselves, and that will help developers to build pervasive location-based services that support such user-oriented privacy control. Futhermore, the services provided by the platform will be illustrated with a demonstration application, in the area of mobile tourism.

Information Technology (IT) departments are under pressure to deliver business value to their organization. There is a need for RE methods that enable engineers to align IT system requirements with the business value expected by the organization. This is becoming ever more complicated with the emergence of complicated business models where the barriers between competitors, suppliers and customers are torn down through the use of IT systems and globalization. Ever more stringent regulations in all types markets are also changing the value proposition expected by companies and public sector organizations. Business-oriented RE methods have only emerged in recent years and much work remains to be done. This proposal seeks to research methods for modeling and simulating these new business models, analyze the value that IT systems can provide and define requirements for these IT systems. The modeling and analysis are based on the inclusion of game theory and system dynamics models within existing business oriented RE methods.

This research aims at improving the information systems management support to Risk and Compliance Management process and/or value chain for ’nancial industry, speci’cally in an networked context. Compliance Management is the management of all compliance imperatives that impact an organization, including both legal (SOX, Basel II, MiFID …) and strategically self-imposed imperatives (mission statements, codes, standards, guidelines, etc.). Currently there is no application framework and open ontology on the market integrating multiple external service providers in the compliance management context.

The new economy and the globalization trends have brought the new need for an increased international cooperation in the sector of software engineering. The SoftCust project is divided into 2 phases with clear milestones and deliverables. The main goal of this pro ject is to develop a methodology for customizing, securing and commercializing Swiss original software applications on the Chinese market through 4 selected software cases. A SoftCust network will be initialized to achieve software engineering expertise transfer. With a positive result of the SoftCust project, the knowledge-based network should continue to operate. Finally, it should be transferred into a Sino-Swiss association for software business promotion in the Chinese market.

’Cases in Information Systems ’ CasIS’ (previously known as FOIS1 for Managers) intends to put the participants through an initial (online) test, which provides the basis for a customized set of e-learning modules to level the prior knowledge of the participants. Using online preparation modules, consisting of newly produced modules as well as of reviewed and adapted FOIS modules, the acquisition of declarative knowledge is being transferred from classroom teaching to online learning. Moreover, case study work will be supported by multimedia case studies, giving the students a very realistic scenario. Students get addtional resources like methods and analysis tools. There will, thus, be more time for working on case studies, discussions with experts, and to answer the participants’ questions in the classroom. Specifically, ’Cases in Information Systems ’ CasIS’ proposes to (1) develop online preparation modules by re-using and adapting e-learning modules on information systems (IS) developed for bachelor students within the SVC projects FOIS and OPESS2 to the requirements of master programs (both for university and executive academic education) as well as developing new e-learning preparation modules, (2) develop e-learning modules for the case study work and (3) investigate methods for dynamic online assessment and customization of learning units. In addition, ’Cases in Information Systems’ tests the technical, organisational, and didactic processes that are needed to adapt eonline material produced for Bachelor education to the requirements of master education.

The main ob jective of the research will be to design and operate an idea market for assessing the emergence and the evolution of mobile technologies. This recent innovation suggests transferring the tools and methods for trading commodity and ’nancial futures to futures markets for ideas. Such electronic markets trade on propositions whether events will occur, have applications to decision-making, and has proven itself to be an accurate predictor of future events. The price of an idea aggregates believes that the proposition will be realized.
